Cyclodextrin can effectively increase the solubility and dissolution rate of some poorly water-soluble drugs in water, e.g. prostaglandin-CD inclusion complex can increase the solubility of the main drug and thus make an injection.

It can also improve the stability and bioavailability of drugs (e.g. volatile oil of Entercon granules); resulting in an increase in the efficacy of the agent or a decrease in the amount taken. It reduces the bad odor or bitterness of the drug (e.g. Andrographis paniculata); reduces the irritation and toxic side effects of the drug (e.g. diclofenac sodium); and makes the drug (e.g. berberine hydrochloride) slow release and improves the dosage form.

2. Analytical Chemistry

  Cyclodextrins are chiral compounds that have the ability to recognize and select organic molecules and have been successfully used in various chromatographic and electrophoretic methods to separate various isomers and enantiomers. Cyclodextrins can improve the selectivity of the system in electrochemical analysis. 

3. Daily use chemicals

  Cyclodextrins can be used together with surfactants in shampoos and kitchen cleaners to reduce the skin irritation of surfactants; cyclodextrins can also be used to remove oil stains on fabrics; in dyeing processes, the use of cyclodextrins can significantly reduce the initial dyeing rate, improve the uniformity and the amount of fiber coloring. 

4. Environmental protection

  The environmental application of cyclodextrins is based on their ability to form a stable envelope with pollutants, thus reducing environmental pollution. Its unique molecular structure can be used for biological treatment of industrial wastewater. In addition, air fresheners can achieve the effect of slow release of gas molecules and prolong the duration of fragrance by adding cyclodextrins. 

5. Agriculture

  Pyrethroids are a very important class of insecticides. The use of cyclodextrins can solve the problem that they are insoluble in water and need to consume a lot of organic solvents, which is an effective way to solve the pollution of the environment by pyrethroids. Fish feed containing unsaturated fatty acids can be prevented from spreading into water by encapsulating the fatty acids with cyclodextrins.

6. Food and spice field

Improve the stability and longevity of nutritional molecules, mask or correct the bad odor and taste of nutritional molecules, increase the brightness of beverage drinking wine color, improve the taste of food, increase the stability of fragrance perfume and pigment

It can also make the food preservative slowly release, improve the preservative effect, and extend the shelf life of food

7. Cosmetic field

As stabilizer and emulsifier, it has obvious emulsification effect, and the organic molecules in cosmetics can reduce the irritation of skin and mucous membrane tissues, enhance the stability of substances, prevent the volatilization of nutrients and oxidation.

 8. Application of cyclodextrins in surfactants for detergents

A large part of the fragrance contained in detergent products is volatilized in production and storage. Adding a certain amount of cyclodextrin to laundry detergent can inhibit the evaporation of the fragrance. When the laundry powder is dissolved into water, the surfactant molecules replace the fragrance molecules with cyclodextrin, thus releasing the fragrance. If it contains β-cyclodextrin-fragrance encapsulation, the fragrance molecules are most easily replaced by cationic surfactants. The active ingredients in special detergents, cyclodextrin can also play a stabilizing and deodorizing role;

Second, cyclodextrins and surfactants can be used in shampoos and kitchen cleaners to reduce the irritation of surfactants to the skin. For example, methylated cyclodextrins can also be used in soaps and shampoos;

(iii) Cationic surfactants and cyclodextrins can be used as synergistic deodorants;

Fourth, cyclodextrin can be used as a defoamer. When cyclodextrin is added to the water used to wash clothes, the residual detergent can be removed due to the encapsulation effect of cyclodextrin. This reduces the number of laundry steps and can save water;

V. The encapsulation of surfactants by cyclodextrins increases the critical micelle concentration of surfactants, thus increasing the amount of detergent;

Sixth, cyclodextrins can also be used to remove oil stains from fabrics. A better way is to use the detergent and cyclodextrin in separate washing steps, using the affinity of cyclodextrin itself for oil stains to get rid of oil stains.

Cyclodextrins can be used by making the detergent very concentrated.

Because the detergency is highly dependent on the concentration of surfactant before and after the critical micelle concentration: below the critical micelle concentration, the detergency decreases sharply with the decrease of surfactant concentration; above the critical micelle concentration, the detergency can hardly change with the concentration of surfactant. The critical micelle concentration is the maximum concentration of detergent used.
